Graves was a professional carpenter and boat builder, working in a building behind his home. He was an active hunter and considered one of the best decoy carvers in the Midwest, producing well-proportioned examples similar in quality to those of Robert Elliston. His clients were affluent duck hunters willing to pay $75 to $100 for a rig of twelve decoys. Graves did not paint his decoys, but benefited from the skills of Millie Graves, his sister-in-law who did most of the painting and that of Catherine Elliston, Robert's wife. As a result, Graves' decoys are known for their exquisite featheration. How we learn about communities; American communities in history. 16 History; 18 Social Systems; 25-27 Fine Arts. less
