- Description
The original finding aid described this as: Description: Extravehicular mobility unit (EMU) suited astronauts Leroy Chiao (EV1) and Daniel Barry (EV2) conduct EVA development flight test (EDFT) and Detailed Test Objective (DTO) 671 - EVA Hardware for Future Scheduled EVA Missions. Chiao and Barry assemble the rigid umbilical (RU) which reaches diagonally across the payload bay. Chiao stands on the Portable Work Platform (PWP) which is mounted on the remote manipulator system (RMS) end effector and unreels cable from the cable caddy and attaches it to the RU (007-9). Barry works at the starboard attachment point of the RU and the Articulating Portable Foot Restraint (APFR) part of the PWP attached to the RMS end effector is in the right side of the frame (010). Chiao, standing on the PWP, is raised up by the RMS arm and works with the workstation stanchion and other components of the PWP including the cable caddy. Barry is visible in the frames still working on the starboard RU (011, 014-15). The payload bay is dark in views 012-13 with only payload bay lights glowing in the darkness. After the work is over, Chiao comes up close to the aft flight deck windows and has his picture taken with earth glow behind him (016-24). Barry, now standing on PWP attached to the RMS end effector, prepares to detach the starboard side of the RU (025-27). The RU now folded, Chiao detaches the port payload bay connection as Barry in the PWP holds the RU (028-30). Together Chiao and Barry stow the RU in its port payload bay berth (031-34). In all these views, the Japanese Space Flyer Unit (SFU) is berthed in the payload bay, the OAST-Flyer is not.
