While President of the University of Washington he dealt with the Un-American Activities Committee and subsequently dismissed three professors for their affiliation with the Communist Party. He served as the first Chancellor of University of California, Los Angeles from 1951 to 1959. Colston E. Warne (1900-1987) received his MA in economics from Cornell University in 1921, he earned his Ph.D. in political economy in 1925 from the University of Chicago. He taught at Amherst University from 1930 until 1969. He cofounded the Consumers Union in 1936, he later defended the Consumers Union in 1954 when he testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee and requesting that it be removed from the list of subversive organizations.
