The original finding aid described this as: Description: Earth observation views of the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia taken during the STS-35 mission from Columbia, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 102. This detailed view of the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia shows several small patch reefs within the overall reef system. The Great Barrier Reef, largest in the world, comprises thousands of individual reefs of great variety and are closely monitored by marine ecologists. These reefs are about 6000 years old and sit on top of much older reefs. The most rapid coral growth occurs on the landward side of the reefs. Image 006 was selected by the Public Affairs Office (PAO) for public release.
