George W. Norris was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1912 and served from March 1913 to January 1943. By early 1930, Norris had good reason to have a big smile on his face. The Democrats had no candidate of stature to oppose Norris, and even the man in the street could exclaim: "General Pershing declined to run against him!".
