This illustration entitled, "The Nations Grief", by cartoonist Clifford Berryman, which appeared in the Washington Post on September 15, 1901, reflects the somber occassion of the assassination of President William McKinley. On September 14, 1968 President William McKinley joined the honorable ranks of former Presidents Abraham Lincoln and James Garfield all of whom succumbed to assassination attempts. This cartoon commemorates the late President's role as leader, soldier, and man of the people. The District of Columbia in particular mourns over President McKinley who ardently supported the city that welcomed him so kindly, and Miss Europe stands by her side offering sympathy at the passing of a great foreign policy leader. The beloved President McKinley would be both loved and missed sincerely. less
