During the battle, one Union artillery battery lost 65 of its 88 horses at Gettysburg. A caisson is intended to transport ammunition, and carries two chests. It has a stock like that on the gun carriage, terminating in a lunette, so that it can be hooked to a limber (basically a two-wheeled cart, simply an axle, with its wheels, surmounted by a framework for holding an ammunition chest and receiving the tongue) for transportation.
