  • A strong earthquake hit the northwestern United States just before noon on April 13, 1949. Many Seattle buildings were damaged. The local newspapers reported that bricks cascaded from the cornice at the top of the Hotel Seattle. The local newspapers reported that bricks cascaded from the cornice at the top of the Hotel Seattle. The falling debris bent the fire escapes, littered Yesler Way, and damaged five cars which were parked at the curb.This photo shows the workmen cleaning up the earthquake debris at the Hotel Seattle. Workmen are using a crane to remove loose bricks at the top of the building. Piles of brick litter the street below. less
