- Description
This five page piece written by Fred Travis, staff writer for the Chattanooga Times, is a draft of a newspaper article which describes the events surrounding the Tent City event in Fayette County, and the city itself. Travis discusses John McFerren, the whites' reaction to the tent cities, and the conditions in the Tent City, among other facets of the situation. This piece shows the racist mindset of the time period as seen in Travis' words concerning the African Americans displaced to the Tent City: "[m]ost of the Negroes being put off the farm are ignorant, unskilled and, in some respects, almost child-like."
