Married to Edgar Ames (1824-1867) in 1860, she bore him four children before his death in 1867: Ada Semple Ames, Henry Semple Ames, Mary "Mamie" Semple Ames and Edgar Ames. After his death she took over the family business concerns and added a real estate development company, the Ames Realty Company. She was president, and her son Henry was secretary. She became a member of the Equal Suffrage Society in 1869 and championed women's education.Her brother was Eugene Semple (1840–1908), the 13th Governor of Washington Territory, and father of Mary Swanstrom. less
