  • Slide shows the area leading up to Mount St. Helens. While we were waiting for our permit, we drove up in the vehicles to find out how far we could get up the crater. As you started driving up the area, there were a lot of trees in this region. It wasn't in the blast zone, but the ash had fallen everywhere and was just coating everything.     Slide shows the area leading up to Mount St. Helens. While we were waiting for our permit, we drove up in the vehicles to find out how far we could get up the crater. As you started driving up the area, there were a lot of trees in this region. It wasn't in the blast zone, but the ash had fallen everywhere and was just coating everything. We could only drive until the ash got too deep and too dangerous to drive in. You can easily see the footprints around there; it is several inches deep of the ash. These are just on the roads and the area driving up the Mount St. Helens crater itself. less
