Flett called the climb "the most foolhardy act that I have ever performed in the way of mountain climbing." Flett and Garrison started their trip from Summerland on August 19, 1895. From there, they hiked to the Blaine Glacier and camped at the base of Little Tahoma. The following day they ascended Gibraltar Rock. According to Flett "From the lofty pinnacle of this barrier we had the pleasure of gazing down into deep dark crevasses more than a thousand feet below, almost vertical at that. We had no further desire to climb to the summit by that route and were ready to a lower altitude and firmer footing.
