Condon to Professor Melville Jacobs, dated January 27, 1949, Condon notifies Jacobs of the Board of Regents’ decision to retain Jacobs as a professor, and explains the terms of the retention, writing, “After due deliberation and discussion, the Board voted to adopt the recommendation of President Allen in regard to your retention on the faculty of the University.” The terms were that Jacobs “sign and file…an affidavit that you are not now a member of the Communist Party and that you have not been a member of the Communist Party” and that he be placed on probation for two years. less
