Photo taken by Lowell Gardenhour, Staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force Squadron. In the photograph the Haiphong to Do Son bus is flipped over on its side in a rice paddy. A French soldier and a French military tow truck is helping to pull the bus out.
Photo was taken in 1954.
Lowell Gardenhour was born in 1932 and is a native of Waynesboro, PA. Gardenhour joined the United States Air Force in 1952. He was one of roughly two hundred U.S. Air Force personal sent to assist the French in Indochina; as a result, Gardenhour's photographs are very rare. At the time U.S. involvement in Indochina was deemed top secret; Americans were kept unaware of US military operations with the French. The collection includes photographs from his service in Japan, Vietnam, and Korea, as well as ephemera from his travels and service.
