One side of the shoe was longer than the other, either the left or the right depending on which hoof of the horse it was placed on. The long side of the side weight shoe was always closest to the inside of the horse's leg. Just like people sometimes wear corrective shoes to help them walk without injury, horses as well sometimes need special shoes.
