  • Caption handwritten on image: Here is shown the village of St. Paul on St. Paul Island one of the Pribilov Group. The inverted boats in the foreground are the native freight boats made of skins sewed together; these seams in this case are painted with white lead to keep them water tight, and gives them the appearance of crude decoration. Port Townsend [Washington] 12/29/00. Sincerely C.H. GardnerFiled in Alaska--Cities/Location--St. Paul.
