- Description
REL C 341
The original Erie Canal was completed in 1825. Over the years, the canal was moved and enlarged several times to accommodate more traffic and larger boats. A new canal, the New York State Barge Canal, was begun in 1905 and completed in 1918. This image shows the Barge Canal--which is often referred to as the Erie Canal--at Lyons, New York, about twenty miles east of Palmyra. One of the locks on the canal can be seen at the far left. The canal today is primarily used for recreational purposes.
