- Description
In 1852 President Millard Fillmore commissioned a naval expedition to Japan to open trade relations and to protect shipwrecked American seamen from Japan's anti-foreign policies. Commodore Matthew C. Perry commanded the expedition and negotiated the Treaty of Kanagawa, which opened Japan to limited trade and ensured the safety of shipwrecked American seamen washed onto the shores of Japan.
