This document is an abstract of the testimony in reference to Professor Garland Ethel during the Canwell Committee’s hearing on Un-American Activities at the University of Washington. Included in this document are several pages of question and answer between Professor Ethel and members of the Canwell Committee. Also included are short factual statements on Professor Ethel’s past, especially concerning his time as a member of the Communist Party between the mid 1930’s and early 1940’s; as well as witness testimony against Professor Ethel concerning his Communist Party affiliations. Pencil markings and writing on this document are in Professor Garland Ethel’s own hand, to emphasize certain points in his defense against charges brought against him in his hearing for the Faculty Tenure Committee. less
