    This is an autographed portrait of Lieutenant Clifford Emory “Pop” Horton (July 11, 1892 – April 1981), who graduated in 1919 from the International YMCA College, now Springfield College. This portrait photograph shows him in his US Infantry uniform in World War I. While at Springfield College, he participated in the Gymnastic Team and was known for his tumbling act. From 1923-1961, Horton served as Director of Health and Physical Education for Men at Illinois State. In 1926, he founded Gamma Phi Circus, the oldest collegiate circus in the United States, as well as the Lake Bloomington annual summer camp for handicapped children. In 1929, Horton received approval to found the Alpha Chapter of Gamma Phi (a fraternity dedicated to physical education, fitness, and gymnastics). He served as Director of Gamma Phi Circus for nineteen years. Horton was the ninth head football coach for the Illinois State Redbirds, and he held that position from 1923 until 1924. From 1950-1965, he served as commissioner of the Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. less
