Poll tax receipt

This poll tax receipt belonged Robert S. Anderson, of Ward 45, Precinct 2, Memphis, Tenn. and is dated April 25, 1940. Poll taxes were instituted in the Tenn. Constitution of 1872 in an effort to restrict voting of African-Americans. They remained in; effect until the early 1960s.
