This payroll acknowledges that C. H. Dimmock, Captain, Corps of Engineers, paid certain Greensville County, Virginia, slave owners for work performed by their slaves at the defenses of Petersburg, Virginia, during August 1862. Slave owner John R. Bendall provided slaves named William and Matthew. Slave owner Ann H. Batt provided slaves named Hordy and Sam. Slave owner B. A. Bailey provided slaves named Alex, Littleton, and Jesse. Slave owner J. R. Chambless Sr. provided slaves named John and Smith. Slave owner J. R. Chambless Jr. provided slaves named Riddick and Nick. Slave owner James W. Cook provided slaves named Miol, Tom, Abraham, Buck, Wiley, Edwin, Bell, Maclin, and Goodwin. John H. Weaver acknowledged receipt of payment for both J. R. Chambless Sr. and Jr., and for James W. Cook. The other slave owners were "not paid."
