• Description
  • The sailing Schooner WAWONA was launched in 1897 at the Bendixsen shipyard in Fairhaven California. The WAWONAwas one of the largest three-masted schooner built in North America. The ship originally carried lumber along the west coast but after 1914 was used as a fishing schooner and was drafted as a barge during World War II. The WAWONA was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
