Original newspaper, Forney's War Press, Saturday, August 8, 1863. Illustration shows "The New York Riot-Andrews Haranguing the Mob." The New York Riots resulted from anger over conscription into the army. The riots took a racial overtone as blacks were; the targets of much of the violence. Approximately 300 were injured and another 120 killed in the riots. The army and state militia were called out to restore order. Many of the rioters were Irish immigrants.
