[Note: The painting is based on a photograph taken by SS-Hauptscharführer Bernhardt Walter, head of the Auschwitz photographic laboratory and his assistant, SS-Unterscharführer Ernst Hofmann. The photograph of a Jewish woman walking towards the gas chamber with three young children after selection on the ramp at Auschwitz-Birkenau is one of 193 photographs that are part of what is known as the "Auschwitz Album." The album documents the arrival, selection and processing of one or more transports of Jews in May 1944. The photos were uncovered by Auschwitz survivor Lili Jacob.]. less
