  • In the early 20th century, Columbia River salmon fishermen used teams of horses to seine for fish in shallow water. The men set the nets from a barge, and the horses dragged the nets and fish back in.This photo, taken around 1911, shows salmon fishermen setting nets from a barge in the Columbia River. One team of horses waits on the gravel bank in the foreground, while another waits in the distance. When the nets are full, they will pull them in.
