Command of the 21st Air Force passed from MGEN John D. Hopper, Jr. (far right) to MGEN George N. Williams. GEN Charles T. Robertson, Commander of the Air Mobility Command acted as the presiding official for the ceremony. Headquarters, 21st Air Force is responsible for assessing operational readiness and recommending improvements in the tanker/airlift system within the 21st Air Force area of Africa, Southwest Asia, Europe, the Caribbean, South and Central America, the Eastern United States, and Canada. 21st Air Force monitors tanker/airlift operations and aerial port operations at NAF units conducting presidential support, nuclear material airlift, airland, air refueling, aerial delivery missions and enroute support at thirteen enroute locations. They execute standardization and training programs and pyramid evaluations for 1 air mobility wing, 4 airlift wings, 1 air refueling wing, 1 air refueling group, and 1 airlift group, as well as 40 gained air reserve components, tanker/airlift units. The Change of Command Ceremony took place at McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey, on October 12, 2000.
