Abraham Ribicoff (D-Conn.), prior to his offering an amendment on the floor of the Senate to extend unemployment benefits for 26 weeks in states with high unemployment. The Senate and House adopted the Magnuson amendment to a routine administrative bill for unemployment insurance administration and sent it to the White House for signature. Magnuson said the early morning meeting with Mills and Ribicoff, prior to offering his amendment, was necessary to insure support for the measure when it went to conference after passing the Senate. Mills, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, and Ribicoff, a member of the Senate Finance Committee, were members of the House/Senate Conference Committee which approved the measure, clearing the way for final passage by both Houses.PH Coll 638.1939. less
