- Description
Harry Shunk and his partner Janos Kender worked as photographers documenting the artworld from the 1950s to the 1970s in the United States and Europe, producing some of the most iconic images of the post-war era. Their extensive body of work documents key artists of the time, including candid portraits of artists in their homes and studios, as well as the installation process, exhibitions, exhibition openings, performances, and events. Additionally, Shunk and Kender completed editorial work for Interview magazine, and often documented street scenes and images of their home life. Their creative collaboration dissolved after 1973, and Shunk continued to record artists and the artworld until the 1980s. The entire archive contains approximately 200,000 photographs, negatives, contact sheets, and working materials.

"Le Paradis Fantastique" was a commission from the French government and first exhibited at the French Pavilion at Expo '67 in Montreal, Canada. It was then exhibited at the Albright-Knox Gallery in Buffalo and in Central Park NY, and is now in Stockholm.
