Slide shows data from the U2 flights in the stratosphere immediately following the eruption. These were filter samples that were collected on cellulose filters. They were brought back and analyzed by instrumental neutron activation analysis. The vertical scale is the enrichment factor, which is rationing everything to the aluminum concentration in the air filter. That is divided by the chemistry of the mountain itself which would be the average volcanic composition. If they are unity or about one, that meant that there was no chemical fractionation going on, but rather the material that was measured was just physically blown into the stratosphere. This U2 sample was collected in the stratosphere, so this indicates that most of the material was injected by the force of the explosion directly from the mountain into the stratospheric cloud layer. There was virtually no chemistry going on or chemical fractionation. There was a slight indication of antimony and silver. less
