The Lassen Lumber & Box Company was established in 1918 by Ned Folsom and Charles McGowan, of Pittsburgh in Susanville, California, in Lassen County. The company built its mill at the end of Modoc Street near the relatively new railroad. The Fernley and Lassen Railroad that passed through Susanville was completed in 1913 by Southern Pacific and bought a boom to the local lumber industry. The company would go on to have two mills, a box factory, and a planing mill. Like many companies, the Lassen Lumber & Box Company was forced to shut down during the Great Depression. However, it reopened in 1936 under the leadership of Horace Bridgeford. The company was sold in 1950 to the Fruit Growers Supply Company, also of California.
