In January 1836, the legislature passed the Mammoth Internal Improvement bill providing for a state transportation system of canals, turnpikes and railroads with Indianapolis the center of the state, the focal point. The Central Canal was to start at the Wabash & Erie Canal near Peru, angle through Indianapolis and rejoin it near Worthington, thence flowing to the Ohio River. Drawn by Christian Schrader.
