- Description
After graduation, Young began working as a physical director at the Groton YMCA in Massachusetts. In 1901, Young moved to Hawaii, where he served as physical director of the Honolulu YMCA. In this position, he taught a physical education class of two hundred young men. Young remained here until his death in 1904. The YMCA of Honolulu was founded in 1869 and incorporated in 1882, and is one of the largest nonprofits in Hawaii. They originally focused on prayer meetings, aid to Sunday schools, and operating a reading room. Work for the Chinese, who were then immigrating in great numbers, began in 1877. Boys work began around 1883. Physical education activities and rural work followed. Hi-Y clubs made up of local high school students were organized and a trade school was opened.
This lantern slide shows two images: the Honolulu YMCA and Fred Young, who graduated in 1899 from the International YMCA Training School, now Springfield College.
