Autobiography & Reminiscence of Robert Jacks, San Francisco, 1901. The Society of California Pioneers
Robert Jacks was born Dec. 12, 1828 in Ireland. He came to the U.S. in 1846 and settled in Philadelphia for one year and then worked in Springfield, Ohio until Jan. 1849. He then joined the "Springfield Rangers", and with an ox train of twenty-one wagons started for California. The train stayed together until they got to Sweetwater. Jacks arrived in California on the 29th of Sept. 1849. He first camped about a mile from Tauson's Ranch at the head of the Sacramento River, but then went on to the Yuba River and commenced to mine. There were five in Jacks' party, and they went as far as French Bar
Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p.19-21, Vol. 2. This is a typed transcript, bound into a volume, of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. The transcription includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes, but there is no longer a photograph of this member in our collection. This reminiscence covers the period from 1846 to approximately December of 1849. It locates places Jacks mined and lists his company's provisions. Jacks also names the men in his mining company.
