  • The Matthiesen family settled on 80 acres on the shores of Lake Washington in 1880. The location was at the foot of Matthiesen Lane, later renamed Othello Street. Their house was turned into the Twin Firs Resort Hotel around 1912. One of the sons, Andrew, started a flower business, Matthiesen's Florist. Another son, John, went north in the Alaska gold rush and found the largest nugget ever discovered in the Yukon.
