  • In August 1953, a large fire broke out at Seattle's popular Playland Amusement Park, sending large clouds of black smoke billowing over neighboring Broadview. The fire destroyed the park offices, the Mystery House and several other buildings. The park's giant roller coaster was badly damaged as well.     In August 1953, a large fire broke out at Seattle's popular Playland Amusement Park, sending large clouds of black smoke billowing over neighboring Broadview. The fire destroyed the park offices, the Mystery House and several other buildings. The park's giant roller coaster was badly damaged as well. Fifteen pumper trucks manned by volunteers from several North End fire companies battled the huge blaze.This photo, taken August 18, 1953, shows volunteer fire fighters trying to save the Mystery House during the Playland Amusement Park fire. Only part of the popular North Seattle park was damaged, and it reopened the following day. less
