During his term he established Columbus Day as a legal Holiday and formed the Massachusetts branch of the American Red Cross. He served as the Lieutenant Governor in Massachusetts from January, 1906 until January, 1909 when he took over the Governorship from Governor Curtis Guild, Jr. due to an illness.
