Alyn Duxbury, emeritus professor of oceanography, wrote in with the following information: The short film showing the octopus is taken at the Friday Harbor Labs, San Juan Island probably in the mid 40's to 1950. It shows the finding of an octopus hidden in a crevice under a ledge in the rocky intertidal zone. The rather frantic actions of the octopus and its leaving of its den voluntarily leads me to believe that the hunters have place some copper sulphate in the water of the den. The copper ions in the sea water interfere with the octopus's ability to extract oxygen. Thus the panic and attempt to escape. My suspicions are strengthened by the fact one scene shows a plastic container sitting on the rocks that contains some blue material. This was not a very considerate way of collecting.
