- Description
James writes to his friend Phil about the difficulties of army life. He has been marching for three weeks straight though serious weather conditions. One night the troops had to camp right down in the snow. He mentions that there are strong Union forces at Winchester, where they expect to be in a few days. He mentions a small clash between his regiment and the rebels and does not believe they stand a fair fight until they can get their forces together. James tells Phil about the scarcity of food, and having to steal food from the rebels. He expresses a need to get back the railroad, so supplies can get through. James is tormented by the sight of so many of his comrades in the hospital, He writes, "fifteen of our boys lay in the hospital just like hogs[.] it tis so bad to see them". He predicts that half of his comrades will die before spring. He closes remarking that he has not seen the inside of a house since he enlisted.
