The states shown in outline color with the eagle transparently sitting atop the nation. According to Phillips, Joseph Churchman authored the text and James Churchman (brother?) authored the map. The map, 42x53, is most extraordinary and rare: it shows an eagle superimposed in engraving and color on a map of the United States, with the talons in Florida, the eye in Vermont, and the wings spreading west to the Missouri Territory. It is beautifully done. Pages 244-48 of the text explain the construction of the Eagle map; it is also stated here that the author intended to publish a larger version of the map by subscription. I have found no record of such a map being published. Book covered with blue cloth with "Rudiments of National Knowledge" on spine. P-Maps, p.887; Sabin 73895. less
