Seaman's protection certificates were provided to sailors as proof of their United States citizenship, and were intended to help protect American sailors from the British practice of impressment, or the seizing of seamen for service in the Royal Navy. This pre-printed seaman's protection certificate for James Reed, Jr. is dated December 21, 1814 and signed by Henry Warren, Customs Collector at Plymouth, Massachusetts. Reed was a 23-year-old American seaman, 5 feet 4 1/4 inches tall, with a light complexion, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, has a scar on third finger of his right hand.
