  • Everett Smith's account of his trip is prefaced by a forward written by his son, Harold Smith, which provides a brief biography of his father. According to Harold Smith, "My father came to Seattle in 1885 after graduating from Yale College in 1883 and from the Yale Law School in 1885.     Everett Smith's account of his trip is prefaced by a forward written by his son, Harold Smith, which provides a brief biography of his father. According to Harold Smith, "My father came to Seattle in 1885 after graduating from Yale College in 1883 and from the Yale Law School in 1885. He was an enthusiastic mountaineer, and made numerous annual trips to Mount Rainier. I recall that one year he was bruised and scraped in an almost fatal accident shortly before reaching the summit. He was a Superior Court judge from 1911 until his death in 1933." He explains that Ome Daiber, a mountaineer familiar with the topography of Mount Rainier, added footnotes to provide more detail about the locations mentioned in the original account.
