Monthly Boards calls to move to quarterly schedule

This is a short notice that the DPLA board will move from monthly open board calls to quarterly open calls effective immediately. It has been a busy and productive first year of growth and regular new developments to discuss, but as we settle into fulfilling our long-term mission we should be able to get our business done on quarterly calls.

We’re excited to announce that DPLA is officially teaming up with Imgur, the popular online photo-sharing platform, to launch an experiment in their gallery from now until August. We’re calling it the Summer of Archives. The idea is simple: throughout the summer we’re going to pull together some awesome collections of images and gifs using open materials found in DPLA.

Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida (UF) have partnered with DPLA by contributing more than 390,000 items, including antique maps, rare books, manuscripts, photographs, oral histories, newspapers, and research publications. All will become accessible to DPLA’s global audience of students, teachers, scholars, developers, and the public.

DPLA Announces $594,000 in New Funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to Research and Pursue Sustainability Model

BOSTON — The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) announced today $594,000 in new funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to research potential sustainability models and to pursue the most promising option (or options). This two-year grant will allow DPLA to expand its staff to target opportunities for further development and revenue, without compromising its mission of open access to the riches of America’s libraries, archives, and museums.
