The First World Congress on National Parks

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) First World Congress on National Parks was held in Seattle, Washington, June 30 – July 7, 1962. The conference focused on improving international understanding of national parks and encouraging the national park movement on a worldwide scale.  Delegates from 63 countries discussed issues such as the effects of humans on wildlife, species extinction, trans-boundary parks, and tourism, as well as the practical problems of park management. Similar world conferences have been held every ten years since 1962.
