GATEMAN AT FENWAY, ca. 1950. Leslie Jones Collection, BPL Print Department.

Gateman no. 3, unmistakable in his hat and dressed for the occasion, welcomes fans at one of Fenway’s west entrances. He sits above what modern fans know as “Yawkey Way”—named for the Red Sox owner from 1933-76.

While exciting plays on the baseball diamond continue to command the most attention at Fenway Park, quieter faces and spaces behind the scenes are equally significant.

Groundskeepers, locker room attendants, trainers, gatecheckers, and thousands more staff and crew over the years have long contributed to the park's success.
