CIRCUS ELEPHANTS ARRIVE AT BOSTON GARDEN, ca. 1945. Leslie Jones Collection, BPL Print Department.

The circus announced its annual arrival with a parade down Tremont Street, and all performers—human and creature alike—entered the Garden via a long ramp. The ramp had to be pitched at a particularly shallow angle so that the elephants would willingly ascend it.

The Garden hosted hundreds of other non-sporting events as well, including the popular annual Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, rodeos, concerts, performances, and some of Boston's most important political rallies and events.
